Overview
- The orienteering adventure is a business simulation activity which takes
place in a large remote outdoor area, near a lake (if possible). Participants
are divided into smaller teams and tasked with finding specific items, each
of which is critical to achieving the overall mission.
Each team is assigned a different route for the program. Teams set out with
map and compass to find a series of markers along a route. Once the marker
is found, the item is collected and teams move on to the next phase. Teams
will intersect at key points along the route and will have the opportunity
to work together and support each other's efforts. They key to success is
found in how the teams tackle these interactions.
The orienteering adventure is challenging, dynamic and loaded with business
related metaphors. Participants will be encouraged to build trust, think
strategically, play to each other's strengths, manage limited resources
effectively and sacrifice self interest in order to see the entire team
succeed.
Facilitation - At the end of each stage of activity, facilitator(s)
lead participants in a debrief of the team dynamics. Insights are gained
around effective team process, the role each individual plays in making
or breaking a team and the dynamics of supporting others so the entire company
wins.
Professional facilitation is KEY to this event adding value to your organization.
It is not enough to go out and have a good time together with your work
mates, the connections must be made back to the workplace for the team building
event to have impact.
Program Agenda - The orienteering adventure takes place in a large,
outdoor setting and requires use of map and compass. Each team is assigned
a certain number of destinations which they must travel to and secure a
specific item, or piece of information (destination end points are marked
with flags). Each team will get a combination of easy, medium and difficult
destinations. Some teams may even be required to go out onto the lake to
acquire their items.
The orienteering adventure is divided into several phases, each of which
more complicated and requires the team building and trust to increase in
order for the teams to be successful. At the end of each phase the facilitator
will invite participants to offer tips, strategies and learning. The discussion
will focus on team work, support, trust, working together, defining roles,
leadership and communication. Teams will be challenged to take their support,
and therefore their overall performance, to the next level.
The day ends with a 60 minute business application and goal setting workshop.
This dynamically ties the orienteering adventure to deliverable business
results. Each participant walks away from the day not only bonded deeper
with their team mates, but with a specific step-by-step action plan related
to how they will support team efforts back on the job.
Program Location - The orienteering adventure program can take place
in any large, outdoor setting. It works best in locations with several acres
of hiking trails, access to a nearby lake with paddle boats or canoes and
a central meeting lodge. However, this is orienteering, and it is an adventure,
so the program can adapt to the location, just like participants must adapt
to a changing business environment.
Program Length - The orienteering adventure takes place either over
a full day (8 hours) or a half day of team building activity. This does
not include travel time to the site or dinner at the conclusion of the day.
We suggest traveling together to the site with your team and closing out
the day with a shared meal if at all possible. The orienteering adventure
can also be combined with the D.i.S.C. assessment. This combination creates
higher self awareness and a better understand of why individuals like (and
are good at) certain team roles.
Program Logistics - Orienteering programs require specific logistics:
- Company team dynamics analysis: blockages, challenges,
desired outcomes
- Program design to address desired outcomes
- Location
selected (where would you like to go?)
- Pre-program orienteering course design and physical
setup
- Introductory kickoff: overview, warm-up activity, team
assignments
- Team name, slogan and flags designed and communicated
- Orienteering adventure phases and debriefs
- Workplace goals and action plan commitments
- 3 executive coaching sessions supporting team building
changes
